6 Days Rongai Route Itinerary and Local village tour
Climb Mt Kilimanjaro Via Rongai Route For 6 Days/5 Nights (Camping) And Local Village Tour
Highlights
The Rongai Route is a unique and less-travelled path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching from the north near the Kenyan border. Here are some key highlights. The route offers a gradual ascent through diverse ecosystems, starting in lush rainforests and transitioning to moorlands and alpine deserts. Trekkers may encounter wildlife such as antelope, elephants, and buffalo, especially at lower altitudes. Compared to other routes, Rongai is less crowded, providing a more solitary and tranquil trekking experience. Situated on the drier side of Kilimanjaro, the Rongai Route typically experiences less rainfall, making it a favorable option during the wet seasons.
The route boasts high summit success rates, especially when opting for a seven-day itinerary, allowing better acclimatization. Trekkers ascend via the north and descend along the Marangu Route on the southern side, offering a comprehensive view of Kilimanjaro’s varied landscapes. The Rongai Route is ideal for those seeking a quieter trail with diverse scenery and a steady climb, enhancing the overall trekking experience.
Day 1, Moshi town:
Upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), you will be greeted by our warm, friendly guide(s). After the long international flight, you will be transferred to a nearby hotel to rest and relax. During the daytime on your way from KIA to the hotel, you may get the chance to view the mountain, which showed itself for some time before being shrouded in clouds. Overnight in the hotel in Moshi town, notice the sounds and smells of Moshi town all around you.
Accommodation: Lodge in Moshi Meal: Breakfast
Day 2: Marangu Village & Coffee Tour (recommended for acclimatization)
After breakfast, you will drive from your hotel for 45 minutes to Marangu village for the local tour. If you would be interested, we will prepare local food, which we can share. The name Marangu comes from the local Chagga word meaning spring water,’ and the village itself is located in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro, about 40 km from Moshi town. This one-day trip takes you to various natural and cultural sites around Marangu
Activities
- Waterfalls (Kinukamori, Ndoro & Kilasia) – Make a splash in the mountain water of Kilimanjaro and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding valleys.
- Chagga Museum – The Chagga culture and history can be explored by visiting the museum. There are several exhibitions including a reconstructed thatched Chagga house.
- Underground Chagga Tunnels – These tunnels were used many years back (before independence) by the Chagga people to hide from their enemies during clan wars.
- Local Bar – Drop into one of the local Chagga bars and drink the traditional “mbege” a local brew made from millet and banana wine. Coffee and Banana Farms – Visit coffee farms and a local home where you can enjoy local dishes and learn the traditional process of preparing coffee.
- Short hike – Hike to Ndoro Waterfall through the beautiful rainforest, and enjoy the breathtaking 80-meter-high Materuni Waterfall. Swim in the refreshing natural pool (optional; please bring swimwear if you’re interested).
- After the nature walk to the waterfall and lunch, you will proceed with the Coffee Tour & Experience. Here, you will learn the complete process of traditional coffee-making, from bean to cup. You will have the chance to participate in coffee de-pulping, roasting, and grinding using traditional tools like the mortar and pestle. You can also enjoy a fresh cup of locally brewed organic coffee. Later, you will begin your drive back, arriving in Moshi by 4:30 PM.

After breakfast at your lodge, your mountain support crew will arrive at your hotel in the morning to meet you and hold a quick briefing, after which you will travel by vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Park’s northern entrance: Nalemuru Gate. After the quick formality of acquiring climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, the group will start trekking up to Simba Camp. Your trek this day will be moderate and take you through the coniferous forest up Kilimanjaro’s northern slope. Remember not to hurry and always keep a comfortable pace. By the time you reach the camp, our professional mountain crew will have prepared everything necessary, set up tents, and begun preparing dinner. Trekking time is 3-4 hours through the rainforest.

From Kikilewa Camp, you can see Kibo Volcano at its finest, if the weather is clear. This trek is more physically demanding than the previous one, so once you have reached the camp, we recommend getting some rest while waiting for the following program from your guide.
- Distance: 10km
- Hiking time: 5- 6 hrs
- Habitat: Moorland
- Altitude gained: 2671m – 3630m
Day 5: Trekking From Kikilewa Camp To Mawenzi Tarn Camp
This day starts with another early breakfast and then a trek to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, which is situated at the foot of Mawenzi Volcano, Kilimanjaro’s second-highest point. When you reach the camp, you will have lunch and a two-hour rest, after which there will be an acclimatization hike towards Mawenzi Volcano with a 200 m (656 ft) gain in altitude. Afterwards, you will hike back down to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, where you will have dinner in the evening.
The acclimatization hike is an easy trek with a slight gain in altitude done to speed up the acclimatization process. You should take the acclimatization hikes very seriously. They help increase your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and save you from the consequences of altitude sickness.
- Distance: 6km
- Hiking time: 4-5 hrs
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
- Altitude gained: 3630m – 4300m
Day 6: Trekking From Mawenzi Tarn Camp To Kibo Hut Camp

The actual trek is not very difficult; just remember to stick with an appropriate pace to keep up your strength for the trek to Kilimanjaro’s summit. When you reach the camp, we recommend you sleep well, avoid strenuous activity, and drink as much as you can, because that very night you will be ascending Uhuru Peak (5,895 m/19,336 ft).
- Distance: 9km
- Hiking time: 5-6 hrs
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
- Altitude gained: 4300m-4720m
Day 7: Kibo Hut-Uhuru Peak (5895m) Then Kibo Hut – Horombo Hut (3700 m).

Before reaching Gilman’s point, you will see Hans Meyer’s curve, where you will rest for a few minutes before carrying on. Also, at Gilman’s Point, you will take a rest and enjoy the views at the crater rim before ascending to Uhuru Peak. You will reach Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro at 19,340 feet, around 7 a.m. up to 8:00 a.m. At this early hour, before the clouds close in, we have spectacular views of Africa in all directions. The hiking time is 6-7 hours. Then, take some photos of the sunrise view and pictures on the board signs.
After that, you descend, going straight down to Kibo Hut for lunch and then carrying on to Horombo Hut for overnight. It is a long descent, and trekking poles are recommended. Then we say congratulations; you have made it to the Roof of Africa!
