8DAYS/7NIGHTS GEOPARK ITINERARY TOUR (NGORONGORO CRATER, OLDUVAI GORGE, LAKE NATRON AND OLDONYO LENGAI)

4 nights at Lake Natron, experiencing the culture of people around and walking safari and climbing Oldonyo Lengai Mountain.

The Geopark’s geological history begins 500 million years ago with granite sand gneiss seen in the North (Gol Mountains) and in the West around Lake Eyasi. The Geopark’s territory lies in the eastern arm or branch of the Great Africa Rift Valley. The rifting is still active, continuing today. The Geopark covers rocky hills, lengthy underground caves, lake basins, hominid discovery site and the active Oldonyo Lengai volcano. The main highlights are Ngorongoro crater, Olduvai Gorge, Olmoti crater, Laetoli footprints, Nasera rock and Olkarian Gorge. Oldonyo Lengai is an active volcano with a recent volcanic activity. The Geopark’s highest point is the Oldonyo Lengai (2,962m) a sacred mountain for Maasai community which is also the unique active volcano of calcarenite in the world.

Day 1: Arrive Arusha.

On arrival at JRO Airport you will be greeted and transferred by our friendly guides/drivers to a nearby hotel to rest and relax after the long international flight. Enjoying a leisurely dinner, notice the sounds and smells of Africa all around you

Day 2: Arusha-Olduvai gorge

After breakfast, we will drive from Arusha to the Olduvai Gorge. Olduvai Gorge (sometimes spelt Oldupai) is the most famous archaeological location in East Africa, and has become an essential stop for travellers to Ngorongoro or Serengeti. Here is where Louis and Mary Leakey discovered Homo habilis, regarded as one of the earliest members of the human genus. Walk around the excavation sites and learn more about this wonderful place on Earth.

Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater

Enjoy an early breakfast we will spend the full day in the Crater, you will drive up to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and then descend the 600 meters (approximately 2,000 feet) into the crater floor for what promises to be an exciting day of wildlife encounters. Explore the forest areas inhabited by monkeys and elephants; the lake area, where you may see the flamingos; and the open savannah, where the lions hunt for food. If you are very lucky, you might even have the chance to see the elusive black rhino! You will stop for picnic lunch will at the hippo pool inside the crater. Late afternoon, head back to your accommodation in Ngorongoro for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Laetoli Footprints & Nasera Rock.

.After breakfast we will drive to Laetoli footprint and Nasera rock. The Laetoli Footprints are the oldest known footprints of early ancestors of humans in the world. The site of Laetoli is 25 miles to the southwest of Olduvai Gorge in the Conservation Area. After lunch we will drive to Nasera Rock for more geotour activities. Nasera Rock is a huge monolith jutting out from the plains to an elevation of 100m on the western side of the Gol Mountains, 27 kilometres north of Olduvai Gorge. The site of the rock has yielded archaeological resources since the 1930s, when excavations started around it. Most of the findings at Nasera consist of stone artefacts, bone fragments, and shreds of pottery dating back to about 30,000 B.C.

Day5-8: Oldonyo Lengai Trek. 4days/3nights

After breakfast we will proceed with our geotour by trekking Oldonyo Lengai Mountain with an elevation of 2962m. This trek begins with a night at the Empakai Crater in the Ngorongoro Highlands. The next day you walk with a guide to the slopes of the Empakai Crater. The second night, you camp on a stunning location on the edge of the Gregorian Rift. The next day, you enjoy a breathtaking view as you walk down the Rift valley. Once you reach the bottom you are brought to Lake Natron Camp. From this camp you can undertake various activities; watching the flamingos at Lake Natron and the age-old human-like footsteps and walking in the Ngare Sero Gorge. You will have your lunch before returning to the camp for some rest before the hiking.

At approximately 11pm, you will be woken up with tea or coffee and a light snack before meeting your Mountain Guide and beginning your trek into the night.

Day 9: Oldonyo Lengai Trekking

Your climb will continue into the early hours of the morning before reaching the summit in time to witness the sun rise as it illuminates the Great Rift Valley below. The views are breathtaking. To the north you will see the salt flats of Lake Natron and in the distance, the Kenyan border. To the east you will see Mount Kilimanjaro and the Great Rift Valley and to the south stretches the Ngorongoro Highlands and Ngorongoro Crater.

Together with your Guide, you will explore the peak and enjoy a picnic breakfast before beginning your climb down the mountain where you will be welcomed back with lunch before returning to Arusha for Dinner and overnight.

Day 10: DEPARTURE
